How to Use Interlibrary Loan

As a distance student you can have Interlibrary Loan materials shipped directly to your home via FedEx. Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service provided by FSU Libraries that enables distance learners to request materials:

  1. owned by FSU Libraries but not available through our online databases
  2. not owned by FSU Libraries

How to sign up for Interlibrary Loan

To use this service you must create a personal profile through ILLiad. Through ILLiad you can request books, book chapters, journal articles, theses, conference papers, and standards documents. Please read Frequently Asked Questions About Interlibrary Loan before creating your profile.

To create a personal profile through ILLiad:

  1. Go to
  2. Click on "First Time Users."
  3. At the bottom of the next page, click on the button that says "First Time Users Click Here."
  4. Complete the form with your information. Most importantly, next to "Preferred Book Delivery Method", there is a drop-down menu. Select "Distance Learners Only- Mail to address." Be sure to enter your correct street address where you would like Interlibrary Loan Materials shipped. Remember that FedEx cannot deliver to post office boxes.
  5. Next to Status, select "Distance Learner" from the drop-down menu. This will ensure that your request is filled as quickly as possible and given priority consideration.
  6. Click the button that says "Submit Request."

How to Request Materials via ILL

Note: Before placing a request, please check the FSU Catalog to make sure the item is not available digitally.

  1. Log in to Illiad at
  2. On the left-hand side of the page, under "New Request" click the type of material you want to request.
  3. Complete the required information and click the "Submit Request" button.

ILL is currently the only method through which students at a distance can access books not available through our online databases or not owned by FSU Libraries. Your book will be shipped to you using FedEx. You are responsible for the return shipping costs. It is a good idea to use FedEx or UPS so the package can be tracked.
