What's in this guide?

Welcome to the Human Rights Research Guide. Use the tabs and boxes to identify and locate items for your research. This guide is just the beginning, so if you need more help locating articles, books, or other resources for your paper, contact us about setting up a research consultation. During a research consultation, a librarian meets with you one-on-one to help you get a handle on the resources you need to complete your assignment.

The Center for Research Libraries (CRL) is another excellent resource for books, periodicals, manuscripts, newspapers, and archival materials in print, microfilm, and digital formats. FSU belongs to this international consortium of university, college, and independent research libraries, which allows FSU patrons to borrow CRL materials via interlibrary loan for extended periods.

One way to identify key collections is through CRL Topic Guides.  See, for example, the Topic Guide for Human Rights.

The UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights (adopted by the UN General Assembly on 10 December 1948) is instrumental to international work defending Human Rights.  This code defends every human being's inherent worth and dignity; freedom from torture, slavery, and arbitrary arrest; access to fair legal treatment, hearings, and representation in a court of law; a decent, humane, and healthy standard of living; the freedom of movement and assembly; the right to work, and more.

Human Rights Resources at FSU

The FSU Center for the Advancement of Human Rights (CAHR) sponsors internship programs and coursework that trains students to better understand how the professional skills and education they acquire at FSU can be placed at the service of international Human Rights.  The CAHR also serves as an advocacy group, provides direct pro bono assistance to trafficking victims, asylum-seekers, and survivors of torture from multiple countries.  Finally, the CAHR assists Florida and federal government agencies in crafting human rights-related laws and policies.
