HathiTrust Expanded Access to E-Resources

HathiTrust ETAS

HathiTrust Digital Library

Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS)

The HathiTrust ETAS allows users at participating institutions to access digital copies of print resources held at their institution or consortia.
Florida State University users have access to HathiTrust holdings from any State University System of Florida institution until May 7, 2021, at which time our items will return to normal circulation.
Regardless of whether users are on campus or using the VPN, users must authenticate on the HathiTrust site via FSUID to access ETAS content.

How do I find titles available via ETAS?

Search the FSU library catalog or the Union Catalog as you normally would. Titles available digitally via ETAS will display the following temporary access link pictured in the screenshot below within the catalog record. There are two types of ETAS links: the first link text says "Read this E-book (Temporary Access)", and the second says "(Temporary Access) read @ HathiTrust."

Please clear cache and cookies within your browser if these links do not show but they should. Pressing the F5 key usually solves this problem.
You may also search directly in the HathiTrust Digital Library, but you will need to log in using your partner institute ("Florida State University") before HathiTrust will indicate whether titles are accessible to you.

How do I access titles available via ETAS?

All users must login to the HathiTrust site with their FSUID to access HathiTrust ETAS titles. In some cases you are prompted to login, and in some cases you must proactively login to gain access.

Starting from the FSU Catalog

ETAS links in the FSU Catalog should automatically prompt users to login with their FSUID credentials as pictured in the screenshot below. Once users are signed in using their FSUID, they will be automatically redirected to the title where it can then be checked out.

More information on checking out materials on Hathitrust are in the Checking Out an ETAS Title section below.

Starting from HathiTrust Digital Library

Users should login first when starting from the HathiTrust Digital Library site. The system will not be able to determine which titles are fully accessible for the user until the user logs in.

HathiTrust homepage

After choosing the "Login" button highlighted in the screenshot above, a drop down menu will appear where you will choose "Florida State University" as the partner institution.

Starting from the Union Catalog

ETAS links in the Union Catalog will result in a page that states, "This item is not available online..." This statement is inaccurate. Users must click the yellow Log In button on the top right of the screen, select FSU as the partner institution, and login to access the content.

The book will be checked out for 1 hour. Access will renew automatically at the end of that hour, unless another user requests the book after that hour is over.

It's possible that a material in our catalog that contains an ETAS link is not available electronically through HathiTrust due to copyright restrictions. If this is the case, you will see the below message after choosing the ETAS link in the catalog.

If a material cannot be circulated electronically through HathiTrust, then the item can be circulated physically at one of our libraries. Simply place a request for the item to picked up by you from the library the item is from (Allen Music Library, Dirac Science Library, Strozier Library, etc.). The specific library the material is in should be within the details of the record in the catalog.

Print holdings in the catalog vs. HathiTrust

Checking out print holdings in the catalog vs. HathiTrust

Some physical materials from our catalog that are also offered online through HathiTrust cannot be circulated. This goes for items in the FSU catalog as well as the Union catalog.
HathiTrust and partnering libraries have made an agreement that restricts circulation of some physical materials that can be found through HathiTrust's digital library. This agreement is determined by federal copyright law. HathiTrust is only able to provide full-text access to copyrighted materials if the library owns a print copy, and that access excludes any reproductions (i.e. printing or downloading). We estimate about 33% of our print holdings are available digitally via HathiTrust.

Print Journals/Serials holdings in the catalog vs. HathiTrust

Some journals or other serials in the FSU catalog as well as the Union catalog may appear as though they are available via HathiTrust ETAS; however, not all volumes listed in the FSU catalogs for a journal/serial may actually be available via HathiTrust ETAS.
These catalog records also do not have a HathiTrust link. The best solution is to search for the electronic (e-journal) version of the title in the catalog of e-journal search on the main FSU library homepage for traditional e-journal access (on a publishers site or within a database). You may also search within HathiTrust to ascertain available holdings if e-journal access is not otherwise available.

FAQ

Q - Are print copies of ETAS titles available for circulation?

A - Not all print copies of ETAS titles are available for circulation. More details can be found in the section "Print holdings in the catalog vs. HathiTrust" of this LibGuide.

Q - What titles are available via ETAS?

A - Titles held in print by FSU or any other State University System of Florida institution that are also held digitally in HathiTrust.

Q - Why can't I download ETAS titles?

A - HathiTrust titles that are out of copyright can be downloaded. ETAS titles still have copyright restrictions and are only available for online viewing.

Q - How many people can access an ETAS title at once?

A - Simultaneous-user access is based on the number of print copies held within the State University System of Florida. For example, if UF owns 2 copies and FSU owns 1 copy, then 3 users across the State University System may simultaneously access the titles. For this reason HathiTrust ETAS titles are not appropriate for course reserves use.

Q - Who has access to ETAS titles?

A - Only available to current faculty, staff and students (retirees, alumni and courtesy patrons not eligible).

Q - How long can I check out an ETAS title?

A - Items available through the Emergency Temporary Access Service can be checked out for 1 hour. If you are still actively looking at the book and no one else is attempting to check it out, the book will be renewed automatically.

Q - I keep getting the message that “All available copies are in use.” Why can’t I access the book?

A - Because digital access is provided on a 1-to-1 basis with print copies held within the State University System, simultaneous-user access is somewhat limited. Keep checking back (reloading the page) to see if the title has become available.

Q - Why are some titles limited to search only?

A - Some titles are limited to search only within HathiTrust due to copyright restrictions. When choosing the ETAS link within our catalog, you will be directed to a HathiTrust webpage where a message will indicate that material is "not available online." HathiTrust vets new content for copyright restrictions, and they do have a backlog. If you suspect an item should be free of copyright restrictions, please send a message to lib-erm@fsu.edu and we will ask them to investigate.
