Fine Arts in Special Collections

An introduction to the major fine arts collections in in Special Collections and Archives

How to Use this Guide

This guide is for internal use and the supplementation of public guides related to the creative arts. This guide is largely comprised of primary sources, but some secondary sources may be found in the online research repository through DigiNole.

Within Special Collections and Archives, there are a number of institutional and individual collections that reflect the history of art at FSCW and FSU, as well as that of the greater Tallahassee community. Use the navigation on the left-hand side to navigate to a specific area of art, or to find helpful articles and databases.

Doing Research in Special Collections and Archives

Keywords are what we use to search databases, but rarely does a single keyword produce perfect or complete results. Resources may not be described how you expect, and this is why approaching a search with multiple terms will produce the best outcome.

When formulating keywords, focus on:

  • Identifying the main concepts of your topic or research question
  • Brainstorming synonyms and antonyms
  • Spelling out any words that are abbreviated
  • Avoiding abstract concepts as search terms

Example Search
Research Question: What is the history of dance in Tallahassee and who were some of the key influencers?
Keywords: Dance, modern dance, creative movement, school of dance, fine arts, creative arts, performance art, production, music, choreography, creative arts guild, Florida State College for Women, Florida State University, Tallahassee, Martha Graham, Louis Horst, Erick Hawkins, Nellie Bond Dickinson, Mary B. Settle.
