Academic Publishing

An introduction to the adaptations in the academic publishing model, including open access publishing and archiving, authors rights, and tools and strategies for measuring the impact of research.

Open Access (OA) is a movement based on the principle that this situation is fundamentally unjust, and that the fruits of academic endeavor should be freely available to everyone. OA archiving and publishing are the two main strategies for accomplishing this goal, and they promise to benefit both the global research community and individual authors, moving published research into the open and thereby broadening its readership and generating more citations. OA is also fast becoming a requirement for recipients of research funding, as many public and private funding agencies are enacting public access policies to make the results of funded research accessible to all.

The creation and implementation of open access policies has been a nationwide, community-driven process. In passing our own open access policy, FSU benefited immensely from the scores of institutions that have passed campus open access policies since 2008.

The community of OA policy institutions has expanded to include all kinds of schools, with steady growth in the number of schools with rights-retention policies specifically, and even stronger growth in OA policy adoption rates across the US more generally.

The Coalition of OA Policy Institutions (COAPI), which has over 200 members to date, is dedicated to sharing information and expertise to support institutions at all stages of OA policy development and implementation. FSU has been a COAPI member since 2012, and the generous support of our fellow members has been invaluable, providing expert guidance on many aspects of our work to adopt and now implement a policy.
