Identify specific terms in your question. For a course on American music, those terms might include:

  • experimental
  • women
  • American women
  • composers
  • American composers
  • moternism
  • post-modernism
  • conceptual music
  • electronic music
  • women in music
  • social aspects
  • United States
  • minimalism (or other "isms")
  • specific names
  • specific professional organizations (e.g. College Music Society, National Association for Music Education and its former names, League of American Orchestras)

Next, see what others have written about these terms. 

Be sure to note which citations (books, articles, journals, etc.) sound relevant to your topic.

These resources will provide links to the library catalog (where you can see if FSU owns the item and get the call number if we do have it) or links to electronic full-text when available.
