Zotero! for Wrangling Citations

What IS Zotero?

Get Zotero

Zotero is a handy piece of free software that can help you

  • manage your citations and bibliographies
  • manage your readings
  • keep notes on your readings
  • generate citations in the appropriate style for a paper, a thesis, dissertation, article, annotated bibliography and more
  • share readings with a research partner

Zotero has plug-ins that work with the major browsers -- so you can easily pull in citations from databases such as WorldCat, RILM, and more. You can also pull in citations for websites, plus any included PDFs!

Zotero has a stand-alone version that can be synched online. Quite handy for those who work on multiple computers or who may need to access their readings from multiple locations.

Zotero also has plug-ins for Microsoft Word and OpenOffice so you can retrieve citations from your Zotero notebooks. Pretty slick!

How can something this fabulous be free? "Zotero is a project of the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at George Mason University, and was initially funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation." (
