  • Need information about song in the context of American history?

I just want to browse!

Sometimes you just want to browse the stacks. That's great! It's one way of discovering what the library has -- just remember, if an item is checked out, you won't see it on the shelf.

The Allen Music Library uses the Library of Congress Classification Scheme for its books, scores, and some of its periodicals. Call numbers for those items begin with "M" for Music.

  • M = printed Music
  • ML = Music Literature (books about music)
  • MT = Music Teaching (books about teaching music, including etudes and more)

Call number areas of particular interest to singers:

  • M1495-M2199 = vocal music
    • M1503 = piano-vocal scores for operas
    • M1619 = secular solo song anthologies/collections
    • M1620 = secular solo song collections by composer (generally)
    • M1621 = secular song sets or individual songs
  • ML54.6 = Vocal texts, often in translation
  • ML410 = composer biographies
  • MT820 - MT823+ = singing instruction manuals
