Career Research Success: Networking

Networking is an important part of the job search process, and college students can benefit greatly from building strong networks early on. Here are some suggestions for college students about networking their way into jobs:

  1. Start early: Start networking as soon as possible, even before you graduate. Attend career fairs, join professional organizations related to your field, and participate in events where you can meet and connect with professionals.
  2. Utilize your FSU’s resources: Take advantage of The FSU Career Center’s help and advice, College of Business’ Center for Professional Success, FUS’s alumni network, and other resources that can help you connect with professionals and learn more about potential job opportunities.
  3. Attend networking events: Attend networking events both on and off campus. These events provide opportunities to meet professionals, ask questions, and learn more about potential job openings.
  4. Join student chapters of business associations and clubs and interact with professionals in your career or industry.
  5. Reach out to alumni: Reach out to alumni from your school who work in your field of interest. They can provide valuable advice and guidance and may even be able to connect you with potential job openings.
  6. Use social media: Use social media platforms like LinkedIn to connect with professionals in your field. Join relevant groups and participate in discussions to build your network and gain valuable insights into your industry.
  7. Be proactive: Don't wait for opportunities to come to you. Be proactive in reaching out to professionals and asking for informational interviews or job shadowing opportunities. This shows that you are serious about your career and eager to learn.

Remember that networking is a long-term investment in your career, and building strong relationships takes time and effort. Keep building and nurturing your network, even after you land your first job, as these connections can continue to provide valuable support and opportunities throughout your career.
