This guide provides information on creating a teaching portfolio, as well as examples of teaching portfolios and philosophies of teaching.

What is a Teaching Portfolio?

[A teaching portfolio] "is a factual description of a professor's major strengths and teaching achievements.  It describes documents and materials which collectively suggest the scope and quality of a professor's teaching performance...The teaching portfolio makes no pretense to be an exhaustive compilation of all the documents and materials that bear on teaching performance.  Rather, it presents selected information on teaching activities and solid evidence of their effectiveness."       Seldein, P.  (1991) The teaching portfolio: A practical guide to improved performance and promotion/tenure decisions. Bolton, MA: Anker Publishing Co.

"The Teaching Portfolio is best thought of as a documented statement of a faculty member's teaching responsibilities, philosophy, goals and accomplishments as a teacher. It is a flexible document, and can be used in a number of ways, depending upon the needs and interests of the faculty member. It can be an extensive collection of information, or something much more compact and limited."  (Rutgers University Center for Teaching Advancement and Assessment Research)
