Repository Options Hosted by FSU

  • FSU Research Archival Storage System is a 1.6 petabyte storage system that provides low-cost long-term POSIX compliant storage for large amounts of research data and is managed by a full-time team at FSU. The system resides in a controlled access data center and is connected to multiple high-speed networks.
  • FSU Data Center Services lets the ITS Academic and Research Computing Data Center, operated by the Research Computing Center (RCC), manage the logistics and maintenance of data center hosting services for FSU academic and administrative units. The service offers three hosting options, ranging from fully-managed servers to full racks of customer-managed servers. The data center is housed in a secure facility well-equipped to meet power and cooling requirements, making it an ideal solution for everything from academic projects to university research. 
  • DigiNole: FSU's Research Repository provides open access to research products of Florida State University, such as scholarly journal articles, educational materials, conference presentations, student theses and dissertations, research data and more.

PANGAEA - https://www.pangaea.de/ [Environmental Sciences]
The information system PANGAEA is operated as an Open Access library aimed at archiving, publishing and distributing georeferenced data from earth system research. The system guarantees long-term availability of its content through a commitment of the operating institutions.

VertNet - http://vertnet.org [Life Sciences]
VertNet is a NSF-funded collaborative project that makes biodiversity data free and available on the web. VertNet is a tool designed to help researchers discover, capture, and publish biodiversity data. 

Open Neuro - https://openneuro.org [Life Sciences]
A free and open platform for sharing MRI, MEG, EEG, iEEG, and ECoG data.

ICPSR  - https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/ICPSR [Social & Behavioral Sciences]
ICPSR maintains a data archive of more than 250,000 files of research in the social and behavioral sciences. It also hosts 21 specialized collections of data in education, aging, criminal justice, substance abuse, terrorism, and other fields.

Code Ocean is a research collaboration platform that covers the entire lifecycle of a project through publication. With direct access to cloud computing and reproducibility best practices built in, no additional or external software/hardware is needed.

Commons Open Repository Exchange is a repository that allows users to preserve their research and increase its reach by sharing it across disciplinary, institutional, and geographic boundaries.

Zenodo - https://zenodo.org
Zenodo is a general-purpose open repository developed under the European OpenAIRE program and operated by CERN. It allows researchers to deposit research papers, data sets, research software, reports, and any other research related digital artefacts, encouraging research outputs from across all fields of research. Zenodo accepts any file format as well as both positive and negative results, and promotes peer-reviewed openly accessible research.

Dryad - https://datadryad.org
Dryad is a nonprofit membership organization that is committed to making data available for research and educational reuse by hosting research data underlying scientific and medical publications. Most data in the repository are associated with peer-reviewed journal articles, but data associated with dissertations and books are also accepted.

Open Science Framework - https://osf.io
OSF is a free and open source project management tool that provides support through the entire project lifecycle, including pre-registration, collaboration, as well as storage and publication of data.

NIMH Data Archive - https://nda.nih.gov
The National Institute of Mental Health Data Archive (NDA) makes available human subjects data collected from hundreds of research projects across many scientific domains. In addition to NIMH, other institutes use NDA as well, including NIAAA (NOT-AA-19-020).

NSF National Centers for Environmental Information -http://www.ncei.noaa.gov
NCEI is a consolidation of the former National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), and National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC).

What Should I Look For in a Repository?

These are some questions and information to consider when selecting a repository:

  • Does the Repository adhere to FAIR Guidelines?
    • (F)indable: Data should be assigned a globally unique and persistent identifier, described with rich metadata, and registered or indexed in a browsable resource.
    • (A)ccessible:  Data should be retrievable by its identifier using a free and universally implementable protocol, with metadata available even if the data is not anymore.
    • (I)nteroperable: Metadata should use a formal, accessible, shared, and broadly applicable language/vocabulary for a clear, more widely ranging application and representation.
    • (R)eusable: Metadata should be released with a clear and accessible data usage licenses, associated with detailed provenance, and meet domain-relevant community standards.
  • Does the Repository adhere to your funder's requirements?
  • Does the Repository allow you to provide the metadata that will help your data be easily found?
  • Does the Repository have the functionality that your dataset needs?
