The Browse Search page is used to browse an alphabetical or numerical list of catalog records within the CGP. The number of bibliographic records associated with each heading is indicated to the left of each result. "Previous Page" and "Next Page" buttons are available to navigate the browse list. Superintendent of Documents Classification is a system of library classification developed in the office of the Superintendent of Documents of the United States Government Publishing Office (GPO) at the turn of the 20th century. It is based on a scheme conceived by Adelaide R. Hasse for organizing U.S. Government publications at the Los Angeles Public Library in the 1890s, and brought to GPO by Hasse during her relatively brief tenure as librarian in the Public Documents Library, 1895-1897.

Wildcard search

For specific subject searches of LC, MeSH, and NASA subject headings, the wildcard character, "?" (question mark) must be used if the exact heading is unknown. For example:

LC heading search of libraries retrieves only records with "libraries" as a subject heading.

LC heading search of libraries? also retrieves records in which "libraries" is only the first element of the subject heading, e.g., "libraries - security measures"

super? = super, superconductor, superintendent, superpower, supervisory, etc.
