Checkout Policies

  • Scholars cannot check out multiples of the same tech item at a time. For example, two sets of headphones, two calculators, or two laptops. This policy is intended to ensure items are available to as many scholars as possible while also preventing scholars from borrowing items on behalf of others. Scholars can check out multiple kinds of technology at the same time, like a laptop, laptop charger, headphones, and/or phone charger, for example.
  • Scholars can renew their items if there is a second, identical item available for checkout. If not, the scholar must return the item and wait one hour before checking it out again.
  • There are no renewals for the 3-Day Dell laptops. All scholars must return the 3-Day laptop and wait one day before checking one out again.

Laptops for FAMU and TSC

  • Students from other state colleges and universities can checkout our Dell 4-hour laptops and log into FSUGuest WiFi or EDURoam.
  • Non-FSU students may not check out the Macbooks or the 3-Day Dell laptops.

Tech Renewal Policies

  • If there is currently a second identical item available for checkout in the tech cabinets, the scholar may renew their 3-day loan
  • If there is not currently a second identical item available for checkout in the tech cabinets, the scholar must wait one day between returning and re-renting a 3-day loan; this is to give others an opportunity to use the item

Tech Extension and Reservation Policies

  • Scholars seeking an extension on their currently-loaned 3-day tech item or seeking an extended loan period for the future may contact one of the tech desk supervisors
  • It will be up to the discretion of the tech desk supervisors whether to grant the loan extension

Technology on the Floor

If a scholar doesn’t know where the scanners are located, either desk can explain where they can be found. But, if the scholar encounters a problem or has a specific question about the scanners, then they should be referred to the Tech Desk

Technology Checkout

If there isn’t a staff member at the Tech Desk, reach out to the Ask A Supervisor chat for a Tech supervisor to handle the checkout. If they aren’t available, another supervisor will assist with either the checkout or inform you of next steps.

If a scholar asks about a projector at the Scholar Support Desk, refer them to the Tech Desk. If a scholar asks about rooms or a room reservation at the Tech Desk, refer them to the Scholar Support Desk.

Finish transactions where they started unless “Desk Specific” items are involved

Basic Practices

  • Check out any desk specific items before referring to the other Desk for other materials the scholar has said they need.
    • If the Scholar Support Desk is checking out cables and a laptop, but the scholar needs a projector as well, the Scholar Support Desk should check out the laptop and cables, then walk the scholar to the Tech Desk for the projector.
  • Small items such as adapters, HDMI cords, etc. can be checked out at both desks.
    • If the Scholar Support Desk is checking out an HDMI cord and an adapter, but the scholar mentions needing a DSLR, the Scholar Support Desk staff should take the HDMI cord and adapter to the Tech Desk so all three items can be checked out to the scholar at once.
  • Any questions about book pick ups should be referred to the Scholar Support Desk. If someone tells the Tech Desk staff that they have a book on hold, Tech Desk staff can grab the book from the shelf and bring it to the Scholar Support Desk for checkout, if they feel so inclined, but this is not required and is entirely optional.
