The Wyeth Family

This guide is an introduction the Wyeth artist family, three generations of American painters.

N. C. Wyeth

American painter and illustrator, Newell Convers (N.C.) Wyeth was born on the 22nd of October 1882. Wyeth trained with celebrated illustrator Howard Pyle at the Howard Pyle School of Art. Afterwards, he was a teacher for the Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry.  Wyeth is known for his emphasis of nature in his art and his favorite themes of Native Americans and pirates in his illustrations. Living mainly on the northeastern coast of the United States, his work heavily features landscapes from this area and, in particular, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, where the artist eventually settled with his family. The Brandywine River Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania contains the largest collection of art by N.C. Wyeth. His son, Andrew, and his daughters, Carolyn, Henriette, and Ann, followed in his footsteps as artists.
