How to Read a Research Article

Most research articles in social sciences are organized in the following manner:

  1. Title: Topic and information about the authors.
  2. Abstract: Brief overview of the article.
  3. Introduction: Background information and statement of the research hypothesis.
  4. Methods: Details of how the study was conducted, procedures followed, instruments used and variables measured, and the subjects (humans, groups, organizations, etc.) studied.
  5. Results: All the data of the study along with figures, tables and/or graphs.
  6. Discussion: The interpretation of the results and implications of the study.
  7. Conclusion: Summary of the results (and often limits of the study design)
  8. References/Bibliography: Citations of sources from where the information was obtained.

Tip for the assignment: Never start reading the entire article. First, check the title, abstract, and conclusion. If the study fits your research topic, then read the methods section to see if the study used an experiment directly testing the effect of choice. Then review the article.

Tip:
These free tools are not perfect. It is your responsibility to ensure the sources are formatted correctly according to the APA Style (7th edition).

If you have a small number of sources, use the Citation Generator(s) first, then check the auto-formatted references against the Journal Article References page from the APA.
