Features and How to Use

What are Smart Citations?

A citation statement is an excerpt from a paper that references another paper. A smart citation gives context to a citation statement. This is through including the surrounding context of a citation mention and giving a label to the statement whether that is supporting, contrasting, or mentioning. The smart citation of a paper will also provide a confidence percentage that gives you an idea of accuracy.

Here is an example of a smart citation in scite.ai.

Smart citations attempt to summarize the opinion of a piece of literature in a quick categorization of a supporting, contrasting or mentioning article. This feature allows you to look at some chosen quotes from the paper in relation to the citations that have supported, refuted, or mentioned along with a confidence level for the categorization.

What are the risks of smart citations?

Smart citations accelerate research, but risk bias by reducing papers to a single metric. This can lead researchers to favor papers that align with their views, potentially overlooking conflicting evidence. While Scite simplifies the review of sources, the criteria for "high supporting" or "low contrasting" scores are subjective and often inaccurate. All contrasting and retracted works should be examined, and numerical scores should be considered as context, not definitive judgments.

The scite assistant can help you kickstart your research with search strategies and papers. You can also just to ask simple prompts or a question to learn about the environment of a new field. This feature allows you to simply chose options to control the assistant's response. You can require that scite assistant can only pull from the sources in your dashboard which will allow you to have it pull certain information from said sources.

Another feature of scite assistant is making a table with customizable columns. You can do this but searching a question and then selecting the option "Use a table" then you can add columns of interests with question along with choices for formatting options.
