JSTOR supports a number of helpful advanced search options, including proximity searches (words near each other), singular/plural searches (including irregular plurals), and wildcards.
Google (and Google Scholar!) have a proximity operator as well, but it's undocumented and unsupported. The format is "search term" AROUND(number) "other search term". The search terms must be in quotation marks and AROUND must be in all caps, with no space between it and the parentheses.
If you use this more than once or twice you will probably have to fill out a Captcha, as Google will likely suspect you of being a robot.
