Ancient Texts at FSU Libraries

This series was created to document the antiquities, architecture, and ethnography of ancient and modern Egypt after Napoleon's military campaign. Napoleon was accompanied by 150 artists, architects, and printers who compiled a record of the campaign. The Description de l'Égypte was begun in 1803 and took more than 20 years to produce. Upon completion, it contained 844 large engraved plates and is considered to be a major monument in French publishing.

Printed in Greek with an introduction in Latin, this volume contains a selection of works by classical authors gathered together by the humanist scholar, Joachim Camerarius (1500-74). Camerarius was known for his Latin translations of Greek texts as well as his commentaries on authors like Herodotus, Homer, and Plautus.

This book is an early modern printed version of Suetonius' work on the lives of the twelve Caesars. It is a collective biography of the Roman Empire's first leaders, including Julius Caesar. The title page shows a border of medallion portraits of these Caesars.

The author of this book, Heinrich Schliemann, was known for his interest in archaeology and in places mentioned in the work of Homer. This collection of plates documents his findings at the archaeological site he believed to be Troy.

This is a 1541 copy of Homer's Odyssey. It was published in Lyon by Sebastian Gryphius who published classic works in Latin and also translated Greek authors into Latin. Gryphius is known today for pocket editions of Greek and Latin classics which reproduced these famous works in smaller, and more affordable editions.

This book is a 1537 volume of the works of Hesiod printed in Venice with a title page in both Greek and Latin. The text of the book is surrounded by commentary in Greek.

This collection of 23 textile fragments mounted on boards consist of original pieces of fabrics, tapestry, and embroidery from Egyptian tombs of the early Christian era.
