Social Media Research: Social Reading

A guide to conducting scholarly research on social media.

Social Media

Social media encompasses a broad variety of websites, including social networking sites, blogs, wikis, photo sharing, social reading, and more.

Most of the sites on this page fall into more than one category, so it is important to keep that in mind when conducting research on social media.

Social Reading

  • Goodreads is a social reading site "where you can see what your friends are reading and vice versa" (http://www.goodreads.com/about/us). It integrates especially well with Facebook, allowing users of that service to share what they are reading on Goodreads with their Facebook friends.
  • LibraryThing "is a cataloging and social networking site for book lovers" (http://www.librarything.com/tour/). It offers functionality that librarians might appreciate, such as the ability to use WorldCat to find books for one's online library.
