Social Media Research: Social News

A guide to conducting scholarly research on social media.

Social Media

Social media encompasses a broad variety of websites, including social networking sites, blogs, wikis, photo sharing, social reading, and more.

Most of the sites on this page fall into more than one category, so it is important to keep that in mind when conducting research on social media.

Social News

According to Goode (2009), "[s]ocial news sites... offer users the chance to submit, rate, recommend, and comment on news stories" (p. 1287).

  • reddit is a social news site where "redditors [participants] vote on which stories and discussions are important. [T]he hottest stories rise to the top, while cooler stories sink" (http://www.reddit.com/about/).
  • Digg once eclipsed reddit in popularity, but its users migrated to reddit en masse after an "unpopular site redesign" (Walker, 2012). However, the site was recently acquired by news.me, which launched a redesign of the site in August 2012 (http://digg.com/about).
