Introduction to ArcGIS Pro

Wednesday, October 8, 2025 (2-3pm)

in-person tickets available here

ArcGIS Pro is a powerful mapping and geographic information system software. Whether you're studying environmental science, urban planning, public health, history, sociology, or any field where location matters, this hands-on workshop will help you build the basic skills to visualize and understand geographic patterns in your research.  No prior GIS experience is required!

Parallel R

Tuesday, October 14, 2025 (3-4:30)

online and in-person tickets available here

Our Introduction to Parallel R workshop is a free, interactive session that provides a practical introduction to parallel computing in the R language, with a focus on accelerating data processing and statistical analysis.
This workshop is designed for researchers in STEM and the Humanities who already have experience programming in R and are seeking to optimize their workflows for large datasets.

Topics Covered
By the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to connect to the High-Performance Compute cluster and use R’s built-in parallel computing package to improve the performance of their research tasks. Attendees will also gain a foundational understanding of parallel computing concepts that can be applied across programming languages.

Specific topics include:

  • Overview of Parallel Computing
  • How to Identify Tasks Suitable for Parallelization· Connecting to RCC Systems
  • Introduction to the 'parallel' Package in R
  • Parallelizing Data Processing for Large Datasets
  • Running Parallel Regressions for Large Datasets

Introduction to SQL

Tuesday, October 21, 2025 (3-4:30)

online and in-person tickets available here

The SQL workshop offers an introduction to relational databases and the SQL language.
Topics covered:

  • Basics of relational databases, including what a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) is;
  • How to model a simple database, including the significance of keys and unique values in structuring tables.
  • Best practices, including avoiding composite keys, using consistent table naming conventions, and implementing arbitrary identifiers (surrogate keys);
  • Introduction to SQL statements and simple table joins; and,
  • How to continue learning about the concepts after the workshop.

Data Analysis with Microsoft Excel

Tuesday, October 28, 2025 (2-3:30)

online tickets available here

Microsoft Excel is a versatile tool used by researchers across various fields to analyze their data. This session will introduce participants to working with data in the Excel interface, including how to create and format worksheets, make calculations, create charts, and use tools to analyze data in meaningful ways.

Intermediate Data Visualization with Ggplot

Thursday, November 6, 2025 (10-11)

online and in-person tickets available here

In this workshop, we will look at annotating plots, combining graphs, and ggplot extensions.  This workshop expands on the Data Visualization with ggplot workshop.  All are welcome to attend, as we will briefly review concepts from the first workshop. However, we recommend that attendees have an understanding of how to generate a basic graph using ggplot.
