Upcoming workshops for Fall 2024:

INTRODUCTION TO LINUX

September 10, 2024 | 3:00-4:30 pm

This interactive workshop provides a pragmatic introduction to Linux and the command line. We cover basic concepts to allow attendees to begin interacting with the shell and using Linux in day-to-day environments. Attendees will learn about the history of Linux, how operating systems work, kernels and shells, and how to work with files within Linux.

INTRODUCTION TO HPC

September 17, 2024 | 3:00-4:30 pm

Did you know that students and faculty at FSU have access to a very powerful research compute cluster? This workshop will cover the basics of using the High Performance Computing cluster (HPC) to run computing jobs. It is a great introduction for users new to the HPC or those who wish to brush up on current best-practices and workflows for using the HPC at FSU.

INTRODUCTION TO MATLAB

September 24, 2024 | 3:00-4:15 pm

MATLAB is a multi-use numerical computing environment and programming language that is widely used for solving problems in various engineering, scientific, and mathematical fields. MATLAB comes with hundreds of built-in functions and commands that can be used for data analysis and visualization. This introductory workshop will explore various concepts integral to getting started with MATLAB, including working within the desktop environment, creating and manipulating vectors and matrices, importing external data, generating scripts, and creating 2D plots.

INTRODUCTION TO SQL

October 1, 2024 | 3:00-4:30 pm

The SQL workshop provides an introduction to relational databases and SQL. Topics covered:

  • Basics of relational databases, including what a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) is;
  • How to model a simple database, including the significance of keys and unique values in structuring tables;
  • Best practices including avoiding composite keys, using consistent table naming conventions, and implementing arbitrary identifiers (surrogate keys);
  • Introduction to SQL statements and simple table joins; and,
  • How to continue learning about the concepts after the workshop.

INTRODUCTION TO SPSS

October 10, 2024 | 3:00-4:30 pm

SPSS is a comprehensive statistical package used by researchers in many fields. This session will introduce participants to beginning data analysis skills, such as using data files, modifying data, and basic statistical analysis commands.

DATA ANALYSIS WITH MICROSOFT EXCEL

October 15, 2024 | 3:00-4:30 pm

Microsoft Excel is a versatile tool that is used by researchers in a variety of fields to analyze their data. This session will introduce participants to working with data in the Excel interface, including how to create and format worksheets, make calculations, create charts, and use tools to analyze data in meaningful ways.

INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOGRAMMETRY

October 22, 2024 | 3:00-4:30 pm

This introductory workshop to photogrammetry will equip individuals, regardless of their prior experience or background, with the necessary skills to create accurate and detailed 3D models from photographs. We will be using the Research Computing Center's High-Performance Computing (HPC) service during the workshop. We will provide a workshop account for each in person in attendance for a hands-on experience using the HPC for photogrammetry work. This workshop will cover topics like building point clouds, meshes, textures, and exporting for additional post-processing or publishing.

INTRODUCTION TO NVIVO

October 31, 2024 | 3:00-4:30 pm

NVivo is a qualitative data analysis package that allows users to work with large amounts of data and supports a wide range of research methodologies. This session will introduce participants to the software and provide a demonstration with qualitative data.
