Following the submission of your manuscript to the Dissertation Committee, the next phases comprise the defense of your dissertation, its revision, and the formatting of the manuscripts in accordance with the University's manuscript clearance rules. This webpage provides resources and strategies for preparing for defense, whether in-person or virtually, formatting the manuscript, and disseminating the dissertation. 

Tasks for Defense

  • Memorize the statement of your research problem and your title.
  • Review your key sources. 
  • Search for last-minute on-point studies.
  • Review your data-collection logbook.
  • Review your analysis rationale.
  • Ask recent graduates for tips and anecdotes
  • Schedule your defense. 
  • Find people to provide moral support. 
  • Find a post-defense chauffeur. 
  • Meet with your advisor to confirm positions on your research. 
  • Distribute the defense version of your thesis/dissertation. 
  • Select and prepare visual aids. 
  • Confirm your defense date with your committee
  • Outline and prepare notes for your presentation
  • Practice your presentation. 
  • Organize and pack the materials for your defense. 
  • Defend our dissertation.
  • Revise your dissertation. 
  • Get the required signatures for your dissertation.
  • File the final version of your dissertation with your
    committee and the University.
