Distance Services for Faculty: Accessing Materials

The purpose of this guide is to help and support distance faculty members in acquiring materials and doing research using our library and services.

UBorrow

UBorrow allows current FSU faculty, staff, and students to request materials directly from participating libraries within Florida's State Univerity system. UBorrow is unmediated, which means it increases your access to the collections of other universities in Florida. This service delivers materials more quickly than the standard interlibrary loan, and offers a sixty day loan period as well as a chance to request renewal of materials for extended use.

To use UBorrow, click on the blue Uborrow link when browsing the FSU catalog, as indicated in the example below.

"UBorrow" button on catalog search results page

This link will take you to the State University Libraries' catalog, which shows all available items within the university system. To borrow an item, click on the UBorrow link again, provide your FSU library numbers (the number beginning with 206 located on your FSUID card), and select where you would like to retrieve your materials. You will receive an email a few days after your request letting you know your item is ready for pickup.

For more information, please visit UBorrow or contact Delivery Unit Coordinator Reginald Jones by sending an email to rdjones@fsu.edu or by phone at (850) 694-2503.

Interlibrary Loans and ILLiad

Interlibrary Loan Services (ILL) at FSU Libraries are powered by ILLiad, which allows current faculty, staff, and students to request, track, and receive information with minimal assistance from library staff. ILL enables distance faculty and learners to request materials that are

  • Owned by FSU Libraries but not available electronically through our online databases
  • Not owned by FSU Libraries

FSU faculty and students who live beyond 50 miles of the Tallahassee campus meet the criteria for ILL service and may have research materials mailed to their home address; articles are delivered electronically to your FSU email address. An additional perk offered to faculty via the ILL services is the ability to designate Authorized Users - such as teaching and research assistants - to access ILL materials checked out to them.

In order to use this service, you must logon to ILLiad using your FSUID and password. Through ILLiad, you can request books, book chapters, journal articles, theses, conference papers, and standards documents. We recommend that you read through the Frequently Asked Questions About Interlibrary Loans before requesting any items. When you are ready to request materials, navigate to your ILLiad profile and select the correct material type (book, book chapter, article, etc). These links are located on the left sidebar; fill out the request as completely as possible to expedite your request. Your item will be shipped to you using FedEx. Please note, FedEx will not deliver to post office boxes, so it is necessary to provide a street address. Additionally, you are responsible for the return shipping costs when you are finished with your item; we recommend using FedEx or USPS so the package can be tracked.

For more information, please contact the Interlibrary Loan department by sending an email to lib-borrowing@fsu.edu.

Library Express Delivery (LEDs)

Library Express Delivery Services (LEDS) is available to current FSU facult, post-docs, teaching assistants, and graduate students with appointments (i.e. graduate assistants, research assistants, and teaching assistants). LEDS delivers library materials to department offices within 48 hours of request; scanned articles and book chapters are delivered directly by email.

If you are a first time user of LEDS, please fill out this form; if you have filled it out before, it is not necessary to do so again. For more information on LEDS, please visit this page.
