Welcome

Welcome to the FSU Library GIS research guide. This research guide is dedicated to the creation and maintenance of all STEM LibGuides provided by Florida State University (FSU) Libraries. Our main STEM Library location is Dirac Science Library. FSU's main library is the Robert M. Strozier Library. Please take a look around the guide.  If you have any questions, your STEM librarian, Kelly Grove is available to help! We hope that you find what you are looking for.

GIS Software

Below is a listing of software so that you can begin your GIS research!

  • QGIS: User-friendly Open Source Geographic Information System (GIS) licensed under the GNU General Public License. QGIS is an official project of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo). It runs on Linux, Unix, Mac OSX, Windows, and Android and supports numerous vector, raster, and database formats and functionalities.
  • ArcGIS: This includes a comprehensive suite of mapping and location intelligence tools and capabilities. ArcGIS can be deployed on local machines (ArcGIS Pro), on your remote or on-premises servers (ArcGIS Enterprise), or as SaaS hosted by Esri (ArcGIS Online). ArcGIS includes focused apps to deliver complete solutions for your business or organization. Along with software, Esri provides a comprehensive collection of data and content to geo-enrich your data. ArcGIS also provides rich software development tools for you to configure and create your own mapping and location intelligence products.
    • Accessing ArcGIS Pro: Need a login for ArcGIS Pro? You can request an FSU ArcGIS account from the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy.
  • Google Earth: Google Earth is a computer program, formerly known as Keyhole EarthViewer, that renders a 3D representation of Earth based primarily on satellite imagery.
