Middle Eastern Studies is an interdisciplinary subject area which involves many countries, regions, languages and customs, and many subject disciplines, including Anthropology, Art and Art History, History, Economics, Geography, International Affairs, Literature, Music, Political Science, Religion, and Sociology.
This research guide is intended for students and researchers in Middle Eastern Studies of all levels. It lists general resources related to Middle Eastern Studies, including books, journals, and online resources available at the FSU Libraries.
Related Research Guides:
Modern Languages (Particularly the page with Arabic Resources)
Religion (Particularly the Islam Page, in the drop-down menu under Religions)
The Center for Research Libraries (CRL) is another excellent resource for books, periodicals, manuscripts, newspapers, and archival materials in print, microfilm, and digital formats. FSU belongs to this international consortium of university, college, and independent research libraries, which allows FSU patrons to borrow CRL materials via interlibrary loan for extended periods.
One way to identify key collections is through CRL Topic Guides. See, for example, the Topic Guide for Middle Eastern Studies.
The Index Islamicus database indexes literature on Islam, the Middle East and the Muslim world. It is produced by an editorial team working at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, established to transmit knowledge about Islamic and Middle East studies, which have traditionally been part of the curriculum of SOAS. Records included in the database cover almost 100 years of publications on the world of Islam.
Material cited in the Index Islamicus includes not only work written about the Middle East, but also about the other main Muslim areas of Asia and Africa, plus Muslim minorities elsewhere. Over 3,000 journals are monitored for inclusion in the database, together with conference proceedings, monographs, multi-authored works and book reviews. Journals and books are indexed down to the article and chapter level.
