This work compiles the history of the Puritan church in the United States. The author, Cotton Mather, was a third-generation Puritan minister. The work was too lengthy to be printed in America at the time, so it was printed in London. It was also heavily criticized by many for its wordy, flowery writing style deemed unnecessary by critics.

The 2nd edition version of Thomas Jefferson's book is an important document that defends the United States from international critics. It includes information on American society, laws, and Jefferson's defense of slavery. The book also contains maps of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.
