Covidence

This guide will help you set up an account in Covidence and provide basic instructions for how to screen studies for a review.

Importing References

You can import up to 50 MB and up to 15,000 references at one time. There is no limit to how many imports you can preform.

  1. On the homepage for the Review click on the “Import” button in the “Import" button.

  1. Form the drop down menu under “Import in to” choose Screen. When you get to more advanced stages of your review you can import citations into the categories of:

a. Full text review - articles you plan to review the full text

b. Included - articles you are going to include  in your study

c. Excluded - articles you have determined do not meet your requirements

d. Irrelevant - articles that came back in the search process that do not apply to your study. Often these are found during the title and abstract screening

3. Now choose the file that contains your citations. Covidence accepts citations from Endnote, Zotero, Mendeley, and other tools that can create a RIS, EndNoteXML, and the PubMed file formats. You can also choose to indicate the source (database) the references came from. This may be helpful to do because when you go to write up the results knowing how many results came from which source will aid in the reproducibility of the review.

4. Then click the Import button. You will then be brought to the part of the review you selected to important the citations to.

5. After the import is done we can see how many citations were imported and how many duplicates were found at this stage.

a. This process will compare the reference to any references already in your project as well as within the import itself.

6. You can see the summary of the import by clicking on the “Import references” box. You can also check to make sure that the duplicates removed were actually duplicates by clicking on the link on the side.

a. When you do this a list of all the potential duplicates will appear and the one on the left is the reference that was imported and those on the right were deemed duplicates. If you determine that it is not a duplicate you can click the “Not a duplicate” button for those you wish to keep as part of the review
