Alfred Adler (1870-1937) was an Austrian physician and psychotherapist most known for founding Adlerian, or individual, psychology. It was coined as "individual" psychology, as Adler viewed the human being as an individual whole. This field of psychology put emphasis on the human need for and ability to create positive social change and impact. Adler was also an early supporter of feminism in the field of psychology and the social world as a whole, and believed that feelings of superiority and inferiority between the sexes were often gendered and expressed symptomatically in masculine and feminine style.
