An illuminated manuscript is a handwritten book whose illustrations have been painted in gold, silver, and rich colors that make the book glisten in the light. Illuminating a manuscript was a time-intensive process that often required precious materials and many hours of labor. The resulting text was costly and often limited to only the wealthiest patrons. Below are several examples of manuscript illumination in Special Collections.
