While illustrations in books are often observed by readers, another category of illustration allows readers to interact and manipulate moving parts of an instrument within the pages of a book! Rotating paper disks, called volvelles, might be rotated and used as calculating devices. These devices first appeared in manuscripts but also appeared in printed works as early as the 15th century with the astronomical works by Johannes Müller von Königsberg, called Regionmontanus (1436-1476). Interactive illustrations also appeared in other subject areas like anatomy, religion, timekeeping, or even as jokes or games as well!
